Randy Pausch – Being told what you need to hear

Share this quote:
Randy PauschGet a feedback loop and listen to it. Your feedback loop can be this dorky spreadsheet thing I did, or it can just be one great man who tells you what you need to hear. The hard part is the listening to it. Anybody can get chewed out. It’s the rare person who says, oh my god, you were right. As opposed to, no wait, the real reason is. . . We’ve all heard that. When people give you feedback, cherish it and use it.

Marcus Tullius CiceroAdvice in old age is foolish; for what can be more absurd than to increase our provisions for the road the nearer we approach to our journey’s end.

Herodotus – A real friend exalts

Share this quote:
One man envies the success in life of another, and hates him in secret; nor is he willing to give him good advice when he is consulted, except it be by some wonderful effort of good feeling, and there are, alas, few such men in the world. A real friend, on the other hand, exalts in his friend’s happiness, rejoices in all his joys, and is ready to afford him the best advice.

Stephen King – Would-be writers who don’t read

Share this quote:
Stephen KingI am always chilled and astonished by the would-be writers who ask me for advice and admit, quite blithely, that they “don’t have time to read.” This is like a guy starting up Mount Everest saying that he didn’t have time to buy any rope or pitons.

Stephen King   (1947-)

Robert Fulghum – Everything you need to know

Share this quote:
Share everything. Play fair. Don’t hit people. Put things hack where you found them. Clean up your own mess. Don’t take things that aren’t yours. Say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody. Wash your hands before you eat. Flush. Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you. Live a balanced life — learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.
