David Cronenberg – Art is irresponsible

Share this quote:
David CronenbergAs a citizen, of course. As a parent, of course. But as an artist, that’s where the paradox is — your responsibility is to be irresponsible. As soon as you talk about political or social responsibility, you’ve amputated the best limbs you’ve got as an artist.

David Cronenberg   (1943-)

Thomas Jefferson – Using taste in the design of houses

Share this quote:
Thomas JeffersonAs we double our numbers every twenty years, we must double our houses. Besides, we build of such perishable materials, that one half of our houses must be rebuilt in every space of twenty years, so that in that time, houses are to he built for three-fourths of our inhabitants. It is, then, among the most important arts: and it is desirable to introduce taste into an art which shows so much.

Thomas Jefferson   (1743-1826)

David Cronenberg – Depth in movie-making

Share this quote:
David CronenbergFor me, it’s a full, full experience to make a movie. It takes a lot of time, and I want there to be a lot of stuff in it. You’re looking for every shot in the movie to have resonance and want it to be something you can see a second time, and then I’d like it to be something you can see 10 years later, and it becomes a different movie, because you’re a different person. So that means I want it to be deep, not in a pretentious way, but I guess I can say I am pretentious in that I pretend. I have aspirations that the movie should trigger off a lot of complex responses.

David Cronenberg   (1943-)

Garry Kasparov – A lifetime analyzing the game of chess

Share this quote:
Garry KasparovHaving spent a lifetime analyzing the game of chess and comparing the capacity of computers to the capacity of the human brain, I’ve often wondered, where does our success come from? The answer is synthesis, the ability to combine creativity and calculation, art and science, into a whole that is much greater than the sum of its parts. Chess is a unique cognitive nexus, a place where art and science come together in the human mind, and are then refined and improved by experience.
